Treatment Methods:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)
Anxiety disorders may develop at any point in the life span and may come in different forms as well as different levels of severity. Anxiety is caused by a complex set of factors including brain chemistry, genetics, personality and stressful life events. Treatments may include traditional counseling as well as therapies such as anxiety management, relaxation therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP).
My primary forms of treatment for anxiety are CBT and ERP. Both of these techniques are well researched, proven methods of reducing anxiety and providing lasting improvement to client's quality of life. In CBT, clients learn to restructure their thinking and thereby change their reactions to anxiety-producing situations. ERP is a unique and specialized form of CBT used to successfully treat most anxiety disorders, especially Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Both of these treatments may be used with or without medication.
These treatments are useful for the following anxieties:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)
- Specific Phobias
- Separation Anxiety / School Refusal
I strongly encourage all of my clients to educate themselves about CBT and ERP. A plethora of information is available on the web.
